Toyota engineers have developed a new insect robot with wireless charging capabilities, and it would go perfect alongside MIT’s insect-like micro robots. It weighs just 1.8-grams and comes equipped with an oscillating monocrystalline piezoelectric actuator powered by a 5-GHz dipole antenna as well as two wings facing one another for more efficient flapping.

Unlike other insect robots, this one is charged directly through a wireless radio frequency power supply. This means that instead of just a 10-minute flight time, it could theoretically fly for as long as there is a compatible RF transmission. Their next goal is to create a fleet of untethered aerial insect robots with altitude control.

Level flight can be achieved by adjusting the lift forces of the three pairs of actuator, and the vehicle can be successfully launched by the RF power supply with a transmission power of 30 W. Our vehicle is more than 25 times lighter than the previous vehicles powered by RF,” said the researchers.
